Hypnosis. What is it? How can it help?

There are a lot of movies, news articles and characters in books that manage to use the word hypnosis without really saying anything about it. It’s treated as mysterious and powerful, even mystical. The truth is, it is powerful though it’s not at all mysterious. Hypnosis is a very natural process.

Hypnosis, or trance, is very simple, almost too simple. I happens when a person does something they’ve done a thousand times before, like driving or washing dishes. It can happen when watching a commercial which is why you might suddenly be open to buying a product you didn’t previously have any interest in. It can happen when you’re scared or when you’re very calm. It happens a hundred times a day. It has to because it’s essential for deep learning, relaxation and sleep.

Hypnosis, when used by a hypnotist, helps a client achieve through words, visuals, association and persuasion. It’s a positive experience that allows for changes to occur on a deep level.

This is because hypnosis or trance is a mental state where the inner voice that’s always criticizing or giving guidance steps back, the unconscious steps forward, and things get done.

This voice isn’t always a voice. Not everyone has an angel and demon on either shoulder arguing the pros and cons of every action. Sometimes it’s impressions, sudden feelings of fear, or hesitation.

The voice is important. It can keep us safe but it doesn’t know the difference between real and consistent danger and things that just seem dangerous. It can keep us from doing things that we might enjoy or that we need to do, because of one bad experience.

Anyone can be hypnotized. The reason we know is because a person who can’t be hypnotized can never reach a trance state and if they can’t do that, they can’t learn, fall asleep or relax. Different people require different methods so the traditional ‘you are getting sleepy’ doesn’t always work but we have far more options than that at our disposal nowadays.

There are hundreds of different ways of helping a person fall into hypnosis and hundreds of different ways of leading a person through a hypnosis session. Because there are so many, hypnosis can be a very fun experience which can be tailored to each person.

In hypnosis the subject is always in control. It may not seem like it but the people clucking like chickens on stage are doing so because, at the time they’re relaxed and there’s no danger to it. Hypnosis can’t make you do something you’re fundamentally or morally against or something you know is dangerous.
